question for evinrude 9.5 owners

I have a question for the evinrude 9.5 hp owners. I have discovered water in my lowercase. The lower screw seal seemed junk, but I am wondering if it could be the propeller shaft seal or the very lower case seal. My question is the seloc manual list you basically having to gut the lower case to get in it. Can I replace the propeller shaft seal without opening that case, or can I just remove the lower cover and change those two mentioned seals without major work. Would I need to remove the lower phillips bolt they tell you not to remove , any help would greatly appreciated

you have to open the case, may as well replace all seals, and check chutch dog. BUT you need a Johnson OEM manual, don't try it with the seloc. outboardbooks.com

You cannot easily replace the propshaft seal without disassembling the case.

Removing the phillips screw will dislocate the shifter lever; it is hard to relocate the screw into the shifter lever without disassembly.

If you have a hand impact tool, some 3M 847 sealer, and a seal kit, the seal job is fairly straightforward except for the shift rod seal.

BTW, The seal kits are different for the early gearcases vs. the later models; be sure to get the correct one. Also, pressure and vacuum test will tell you where the leaks are.

You need to take it apart to change it. Be sure to get the right year seal kit. The later model's prop seal and water pump seal have a larger outside diameter and will break things if you try to press them in....(don't ask how I know that) The phillip's screw is the pivot pin for the shift linkage. It can be very difficult to re-install without the gearcase removed. You should probably pull your whole lower end and change out all the seals. Be sure to lube your driveshaft, so you don't end up with it seized in the powerhead as mine is. The exploded diagrams at shop.evinrude.com are very helpful in putting pieces back together, good luck

p.s. The spaghetti seal, and screws holding the skeg on need liberal amounts of sealer.

Good advice so far. (not sure about the corn thing) I would get new drain and vent screw seals and replace the gear oil and then run it for a while and re-check the oil. Many times it is the this seal that lets water in and no need to open the gear case unless you really need to. If you go further, I agree an OMC service manual will be a must. Best of luck. Rick.

Corn head grease used on corn heads for harvesting corn. Water doesn't bother it and has been used on older O.B. motors. I can't remember where I ran across it but was in a outboard forum. Ken When I do find the article or thread will put it in here... It also said to keep checking it for water take both fill and vent screws out. if any water comes out add more corn head grease. For winter lay up drain it good (water) leave the screws out for a day or so and they fill again til it comes out vent . . this was for older outboards and some had used it with F-N-R shift ones. And no I haven't tried it yet. Ken
