Not Joe Reeves or an electrical buff ,but open reading or infinity reading between the two yellow wires would indicate an open winding which is bad.Ohm reading between the two yellow leads disconnected from the terminal block should be between 450-600 range.

Not sure whether you are saying that yellow wires are common to ground or reading infinity.They should read infinity.A reading of 0 ohms or 'no resistance'would indicate a shorted winding,which is also bad.

Question for Joe Reeves or Electrical buffs

Hi Joe I have read many of your answers to people
and followed many of your tests the one I would appreciate feed back on is as follows if possible.

You had written the following on another thread

"The stator yellow wires.... Ohm meter on high ohms. You should
obtain a reading between them but not between either of them and ground. This
would indicate the stator is fine."

Result: yellow wires at terminal block from the stator y/g &
y when red test lead to one, black test lead to the other reading of 0.00 no
resistence. same result when tested the other way around.

yellow/grey tracer wire on position 6 of
terminal block, when red test lead to yellow/grey, black test lead to
ground = no resistance

yellow wire on position 5 of terminal block,
when red test lead to yellow black test lead to
ground = resistance
reads at about 22-30 and bounces around alot. This could be the
problem

would you be kind enough to comment on the above results

Engine is a 1977 115 Johnie V4 115el77
the original thread is
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=027536

Kind regards Chris

With the ohm meter leads connected between the Yellow wire and the Yellow/Gray wire, the reading should be almost like a direct short.... really slaming that meter needle across the scale.

If indeed, you are not obtaining a reading at all, there is no need to test further. The stator wiring is open.... replace the stator.

Try a different range on the meter. May have had it set to too low a range Chris. ob has given you the range to look for.

Hi Joe , Ob and Obj

Thankyou very much guys, your advice is priceless
Ill try retesting that to double check and test on all ranges just to be sure, I think i did anyway but best to be sure.
Recognising where the fault is will save a packet opposed to throwing many parts at the motor to try and get it going.
Great forum, made even better by guys like you putting in the effort to help us with only limited knowlege, keep up the good work.:)
