Re: Question for Joe Reeves

I guess its the only classified document that OMC didnt release.
Anyhow, take a look at this chart on the bottom right. web page It says for Johnson/Evinrude alternator with 10 poles set it on 5P. For alternators with 12 poles set it on 6P. Obviously as IndyMike pointed out, teleflex wasnt aware that Johnson/Evinrude made alternators with 8 poles, thus it would only be logical to set it at on 4P.
But what do I know? I am just a young stag.

Re: Question for Joe Reeves

I got to tell you guys, this is driving me nuts. I understand the 8 pole thing and all, but I think joe is right. Basscat, I think you have the same motor as me. When you had it set to 6p you were turning 5300 rpm, 200 shy of ideal WOT rpm. Now when you set it to 4p you are operating @6100. That is 600 above ideal WOT rpm. I would be scared that my motor was gonna blow clean out of the water.

I got my 85 mounted high on the transom. Set at 6p, I am turning 4900 rpm. I used the prop calculater to try to sort all this out.

If I plug in the numbers that I know.

RPM=4900
Gear Ratio=2
Pitch=17 (SS cuppedprop)

I come up with a slip percentage of 8% (believable, I guess)

Now,

If I assume an 800 rpm change, (this is the change you witnessed, with the same setup) and plug the numbers in I would get a slip that equals 19%. DHadley would probably wake-up with cold sweats.

I tend to agree with Joe on this.

I am having a hard time believing that Teleflex didn't know about Crossflow V4's for a decade. There are more than one or two of these things around. Talking to one tech at Teleflex that isn't sure of an answer is a far cry from the opinion of the company. I would go with the guy that has been setting up these motors for 30 years along with the official advise from teleflex which is to set it to 6p. I may be wrong here, it happens frequently.(thats why I count on the guys with experience).

I think we all need to remember. We should not be setting these gauges to read what we want them to read. We should set them to read what is going on with our engines.

Re: Question for Joe Reeves

When I get the time, (maybe a while) I will have my buddy hook up his shop tach to my boat and verify the readings.
The 6100 was with the engine trimmed up as high as it would go. (5950 with out the trim)
5800 is the idea reading, so 6100 is only 300 above. I can tell you it is faster than 5300. I compared the sound of my 85 hp to my nephews 115 at wot. His tach was showing 6000, but I dont know if that was trimmed up or not. Anyhow the motors sounded identical.
Incidently, if you take the time to scroll on down on this chart web page under Mercury/Mariner with 8 pole stator, set the tach to 4.
Set yours where you want.

Re: Question for Joe Reeves

I would be interested to know what the results of putting a shop tach on it. Everything I have seen says WOT range is 4500-5500. I just want to make sure I am set up correctly and not lugging. Changing a tach setting without knowing for sure will mask a problem. I thought mine sounded faster also. But then I said to myself, self, what does a 10% rpm change sound like? Needless to say, I couldn't answer myself. BTW, I am not being arguementative...just trying to find the right answer.
