Question for OBJ

I looked all over this engine that is supposed to be a 25 Johnson. There is no metal tag on the transom. It must have been removed when they camoed the engine. The base color looks like it was green, is that possible? The only plug I see is on the starboard side of the engine and has the letters G3178236. It is a silver plug and looks like a freeze plug. Am I looking in the wrong place for this info that is stamped on engine? There are some patten numbers on the top of the engine and some other numbers stamped on parts which appear to be just part numbers. It has through the hub exhaust so I don't think it can be real old, but you never know.Any other ideas would be appreciated

Thanks from a frustrated duck hunter!

Re: Question for OBJ

Well fetch....its an 85' or later. The green color...not sure. The serial number on the freeze plug may indicate an engine 90' or later? Or a replacement block. Can you see a power pack mounted on the starboard side of the block? Or do the leads to the ignition coils come from under the flywheel?

Re: Question for OBJ

OBJ, thanks a million that is at least some place to start. I will check on the power pack and leads for the ignition coils. I might take a couple of digital shots of the engine and try and post them. Don't know if you can do that on this site or not, since I am a newbie. I noticed that the carb appears to be new or at least very clean and I know that the engine sat for 2 years with out be ran. It appears to be missing an air breather, I assume that all of the engines came with them and not just sucking raw air into the carb. So, it looks like I need a few parts, but first I need to find out what this thing is before I can even do that.
Thanks again for the help.

Don

Re: Question for OBJ

Good idea to post pictures Don. Just find a hosting site and post them here. Take a shot of both the port and starboard side. Maybe we can help from that.

Re: Question for OBJ

OBJ, Ok, I came home with the digital, but by the time I got home it was to dark so I will try and take them in the AM. Here is what I have so far on the starboard side of the engine, I have the fuel pump and small units that run to the spark plugs, one for each plug( I don't think this is the coil?) they have numbers on them
582508
08 ER OA

On the port side I have what appears to be the water pump with the following numbers on it.
19 HR 190335
326713
I have what appears to me to be a coil with the following info
CD2SL
58476 23 GR-OA
On the cylinder head under and to the starboard of the lower spark plug is stamped the following number
D2
327673
2
Hopefully that will give you some useful info to work off of,
Thanks again for all your help.
Don

Re: Question for OBJ

OBJ, also the motor is a short shaft. The boat is a 92 TDB duckboat and I know that the motor did not come on this boat when it was bought new.

Re: Question for OBJ

The small units that run to each spark plug are your ignition coils. From the part number, which is the original number for the coils and still a good number, the year is either 1985, 86' or 87'.

These are the only years I could find that used this particular coil.

What appears to be a water pump is probably the fuel pump.

What appears to be a coil is the power pack.

Not sure how much closer we can get but post the pics when ya' can and we'll see.

Re: Question for OBJ

OBJ, Well, at least we are getting it narrowed down some. I traced one of the lines off the unit on the port side that looks like the water pump and it indeed goes to the exit port for water on the starboard side of the engine and what I am thinking is the fuel pumps indeed has lines that are going to the carb. I am trying to find out how/where to post the picturs. As soon as I do I will let you know.

Re: Question for OBJ

That exit port for water is your tell tale or "pisser" as some call it. It gives you an indication that the water pump is working. Generally comes off the exhaust cover on the port side of the block.
