Hey guys I am wanting to repower my boat. It is a 16' '86 open bow fishmaster. Capacity plate says 85 hp max, 6 people or 750 lbs of people. Motor is a '67 Merc 650 so hp is rated at crank. I have had three in it and it planes quickly and will hold plane at just above 1/2 throttle with me and two others in it. I don't need the speed of WOT but it is nice to have sometimes. I do lots of fishing in it mostly in electric only lakes, but take the wife and friends out in it to bigger lakes sometimes. I want something from 2000-2006 but don't want to spend a fortune. I was thinking 50hp, what do you guys think?

50 is going to be very marginal in my opinion.

I have had 3 very similar Sylvan/Starcraft hulls, and would not do a 50. 60 .... probably ok.

Aren't those mutually exclusive.

Are you looking at 2 stroke or 4?

75% of 85hp is 63.75................60hp or bigger.

Okay thanks for the input guys. Maybe I will think about a cmc power trim for the motor that is already installed. The Merc is a great motor but being A '67 just makes me less than confident taking the wife and a couple out on the water.

And 64 although I like the idea of fuel injected 4stroke I don't like the price and weight add on.

Just wanted to know if you were looking at the 4 stroke, definitely pricey.

I have a 1985 90hp Rude that runs awesome and pushes my 21' Mariner to 40 on glassy water and a light load.

The only issue has been a cracked VRO oil feed hose. It only has power tilt, no trim and it serves me very well.

Something like that would be a nice upgrade to your Fishmaster.

No kidding! Thanks for the input. I actually sold the '67 with spare lower unit today for $700. That's how well it ran. Took the guy on the lake with his wife and kid and he didn't even haggle with me. So ima keepin my eyes peeled!!! There is a nice '93 60hp with P TNT that dude will take $400 for, less controls. I'm thinking about it. Motors newer than that at decent prices are few and far between.

All nice finds. I was also seriously considering this... 1972 Tri-Hull Johnson 65

If I did though I'd just keep that boat the way it is and remove the console out of my starrie an make it a reservoir boat!

Re: Question for Starcraft Tinny guys.

You guys are going to think I am nuts, but here goes anyway. Sooooo, I have looked at quite a few motors in the past week, and nothing that tickled my fancy. I want to keep the weight of my boat down, so going up in HP is not really something I want to do. The issue with me is I do a lot of electric lake stuff, tow my boat long distances, and really am just interested in planing the boat out and cruising when I do run gas. And I'd like to keep my gas bill low, if ya know what I mean. The Merc was a gas hog!!! I am thinking of going to look at a super clean, recently serviced and painted Yamaha 40HP with TnT. Do you guys think this will plane my boat out and maybe hit the 20-25MPH zone? The boat hit 35 or so with the 650, with a banged up prop. THanks fellas.

That 40 is going to have to work a lot harder to get the boat up on plane, soooooooo, your fuel savings will kinda be a wash ya know.

I venture to guess that it could run in the low 20's with the 40hp.

Okay, well I appreciate your honesty here. These Yammie 40's carburetors are interchangeable with the 50HP. :) Do you guys think it is just a waste of time even putting the thing on there? I have seen pictures online of the exact same boat as mine with 40 horsepowers. http://www.boats.com/sites/americanmarina/gallery?&entityid=110448581&mid=2330&ceid=233172&galleryBack=%2Fsites%2Famericanmarina%2Fboat%3Fentityid%3D110448581&baseurl=%2Fsites%2Famericanmarina&pic=9&style=dw
