Okay let me start by saying yes I remember when you warned me about those 470/170 setups. Well it has creeped up and bit me in the butt and I need a little help.

My 3.7 470/170 has a slight problem. I have antifreeze in the rear cylinder. I am ready to tackle to head gasket (being the lessor of all problems). Upon examing the motor it appears that I might be able to remove the head and leave the manifolds attached. According to the local boat "stealership" I was quoted that it is an 8 hour job and both manifolds HAD to be removed.

I keep looking and I think otherwise. Has anyone attempted this?

Sorry Trent I know I should have listened.

Bob

Re: Question for Trent and others

This is just an update...(possible stupid human trick)

I seperated the coolant tank from the top of the exhaust manifold without draining the coolant. A good amount of the coolant went into the manifold so this may have created the problem. With the boat being on an angle (on the trailer) the rear cylinder is the likely target.

Now I have to figure out how to drain the manifold.

Bob

Bob,

Take the head off. drain the oil. resurface the deck, and head; and put a new gasket on.

Last assemble everything and put fresh oil/filter in place.

You should be able to visually see what to take off.. I doubt its an 8 hour job. I can do both heads on a 350 in less than that! But then again, if they go by a book rather than charging you hourly they'll make whatever the book says.

-- Joe

Sounds like you found your problem :)

Headgasket replacement is common on the 470 due to different makeup of the metals. But normally its after a overheat. Good luck. Trent
