Question for ya'll

I just bought a 84 Sea Ray Seville with a 3.0 Merc and I'm having a little trouble. A couple days ago I was idling out in the bay and when I went to give her some throttle the rpms jumped way up but the boat didn't move. She was running fine while I idled out but as soon as I tried to go she didn't want to. Could it be the hub or something else? I have to go through a bunch of sea weed to go in and out of my slip so I wasn't sure if it could be just weeds jammed in there. Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like a spun hub on your prop. Same thing happened to me years ago. Take your prop in for repairs, should fix it right up! Got a spare prop? Try replacing it with that one first to be sure that's the problem.

How costly of a repair will this be? The guy I bought it from said he replaced the prop last year. Is this something me and my dad can fix or is this soething a marina should handle?

and yes sea weed could cause it too, did you shut her down and raise the stern to look at your prop?

I used to live in a small bay with seaweed; would have to raise the drive, and pull seaweed of the prop twice, on the way out.

I did a visual check of the prop and couldn't really see any weeds built up. It was raining like a mother so I didn't reach down there to feel around, we were kind of in a hurry to get to the truck. I'm going out to the boat tomorrow to see if I can figure it out. I'm hoping it's just weeds. :(

Take off the prop nut, mark the hub on both sides of the rubber, re-install.
Run it until it does it again, then check to see if the marks have moved.

Well it turned out to be just gobbed up with seaweed. I idled out to a sand bar and got in the water to clean it out. I guess I got lucky with this one.;)

Easy fix is; when you're past the weeds, reverse for 2-3 seconds with a bit of throttle, will usually clear itself. You'll see the weeds in the water beside the boat as you back up.

Yes!, boating on the Great South Bay of Long Island, this was the fix, that was always a common occurance.
