Question for you Rustoleum guys

I'm working on painting the cap and have the second coat down using Woodglass's paint recipe that I found while doing reserch. My question is what do do after my final coat to get it really smooth and shiny. Do i wet sand 320 then progressively finer and finish with olishing compound or what? It's already got a good shine to it but after each coat I have a little bit of orange peel.
A side note: I couldn't find the Valspar or magic hardener but I did find the same thing at C.A.L. Ranch called "Van Sickle" their in house tractor paint line.

I did nothing to my boat and it looks like a shoroom finish. All I did was sand and paint rolled /brushed it out. Just to let you know i put 4 cots on it. it dont look so good at 1 or 2 but after the 3rd wow and I put 1 more on for good luck;)

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

Post some pics. I am thinking of painting my cap this winter and am likely going to go with the Rusto.

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

How much did you thin it to get it that flat?
I'm at 15%
16oz paint
2oz mineral spirits(in the 90's here)
1oz hardener

I'll post some pictures tonight, 3rd coat is going on this afternoon.

Roll & roll, just got the 3rd coat done and it's a little better but I'm still hoping in the end I can get the sprayed on look. I did notice near the end of this coat the paint was a bit thicker. I think the mineral spirits is evaporating too fast and may need to split my batch in two parts.

You can't roll n roll in High temps and direct sunlight and get good FLAT results. The Paint MUST have time to flow. I would Highly suggest waiting till EARLY morning or LATE evening and in the shade to do your final coat. It will flow much better. Check out lakelovers results. He had problems with high temps and sunlight but when he went early mornings it workd perfect. You can also go to Advance Auto and use their Acme Finish 1 Acrylic Enamel Paint Reducer for High Temps to give you more flow time. Use this instead of the mineral spirits

Ive got it in the shade under a canopy but i guess i'll need to move it into the garage to paint and then back out to wet sand and wash. i think i'll try the Acme thinner as well, i have a swamp cooler in the garage to keep it cool but i think the added humidity would cause other issues.

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

Your right I should know better, long time reader, rookie posting.
Just to give ya some history, it is a '71 14 1/2' Bedouin Javalin(made locally here in Utah till the late 70's)and should have gone to the junkyard as the PO did wonders with a sawsall to the splash well and bolts through the bottom of the hull. there was three feet of snow over the top of it and the foam was ice logged, rotted transom and deck. so a complete gut job, but it was the style and size i was looking for and to learn on before trying some thing bigger.

pics below are of coat number three on the cap. I'm pretty happy with the results so far, its just the minor orange peel that i want to get rid of. As "Woodonglass" has explained it is probably my ambient temp that is fighting me. So tonight it goes in the garage and the wife's car goes out(she's NOT happy).

Question: should I sand down the mild orange peel before my last coat tonight or was the Scotch Brite pad i just used good enough?

Here is how she started, no strigers just foam oh and don't forget, no splashwell. I included the pic of my mold for the new one.

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

I would "Wet Sand" the orange peel with 220 and get it as smooth as possible but careful not to burn thru it all. Wipe it down with Mineral Spirits and then do the final. I bet the early morning temps and the reducer will do the trick.

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

Will Rusto stick to a 320 grit profile ? if so then Id go with 320 before the final coat.

But I dont know crap about the Rusto paint method :( .

Re: Question for you Rustoleum guys

Yep, it will, but... with the heavy orange peel he had, I recommended the Light 220 wet sand. It'll work out fine and the formula he's using to apply the paint will cover great. No worries YD!!!
