Hey guys! new to the site, looks like a LOT of good info on here! Hoping you guys can help me... Just scored me a 15ft aluminum MirroCraft w/ a 35hp Evinrude. The engine as of right now has a tiller, how difficult is it to add a steering system and throttle controls? Id like to make this into a nice little boat to cruise around my local lake( Lake Lanier, N. Georgia!) and right now its just not very comfy! Let know what you guys think?
Thanks!

Need to know what year E-rude you have, post the model/serial number. On the older motors, you simply remove the tiller and replace it with the throttle control for remote cables.

Shouldn't even have to remove the tiller. It probably is already set to go for remote controls. Need the year/model.

Re: Question on a Evinrude 35hp??

I can't locate the serial or a model number on the engine... And as far as the year I need to get some pics up here and your guys guess would be as good as mine. I'm calling it somewhere between a 75' - 80' ... So say for around that year model what would be some good controls? I'm looking at doing a center console so I'm going to need a throttle and a shift lever combo right? Also... Is it out of the question to put a starter on this motor? And if so wheres a good place to get motor covers because right now the pull-start comes through the cover, obviously I'd want to close that off. Just to make it look good..? Thanks

Just my opinion, Ryan:
I wouldn't trade cowls even if it's possible which is probably not. I don't think it would look much better, either. You'll find that pull starter very helpful if your battery gets low, etc.
Adding a starter is pretty expensive, but if you can find a good parts motor you might get by as cheaply as $100 or $150. The electric start IS nice. twin city outboards or laingsoutboards sells used parts.

Thanks for all the help guys! That pic was just what I needed to understand how the steering would hook up! And I see what you mean about the cowl the pull start would definately come in handy, and I'll check those sites out. I was looking to spend about 100 on a starter, makes it so much easier... Which forum topic would be appropriate to start a photo diary of my resto/modification of the boat...? I could definately use your alls expertise on some of the other mods I want for this boat!
Thanks

you have to find out what motor you have before you start buying stuff. model number should be on a 1"x2" plate on the transom mount either under the front above and between the mounting bolts, or on either side of the bracket. also look for a plug like this, on the block, sometimes on top sometimes on the side. these have numbers on it.

Re: Question on a Evinrude 35hp??

Unless your motor is from the 1950's, your motor began life in 1976. If it has gears in the handle to control the throttle then it was built between 1976-85.

Adding a starter and solenoid isn't a big deal. If you want charging capabilities you will need to add a stator and charging coil.

Leave the manual start. I actually added manual start to my 1988 30 hp for the reason JBJ mentioned. The cowl will fit fine.

Awesome, thanks! I'll look for that serial number when I get home. Whats a good, relatively cheap site to get the stator and charging coil from? That would be nice not to have to worry about charging the batteries!! Thanks Guys!

Right here at iboats. You will also need the rectifier. Once you find the year of your motor go to the BRP site and look up all the part numbers. Its quite expensive to buy all these parts new. I'd look for a junker or used parts before buying new. Do you already have a toothed flywheel? If not, add that to the list.

Re: Question on a Evinrude 35hp??

ok... Got the serial and the model number, Serial #E0228509 and Model #E35RCTS. Can I use those to also figure out the exact year it is? Im sure theres someway.... And I do have a toothed flywheel, how often should you change your fuel filter? No telling when the last time that was changed! Is a seloc manual on these motors a good reference to perform the kind of modifications that im looking for? Cause I'm also looking to add some power to her if possible, anyone know some ways to increase the ponies?
Thanks

Re: Question on a Evinrude 35hp??

It is a 1983 short shaft, rope start. Do you mean the filter in the fuel pump or do you have an aftermarket in-line filter? Either way, if its pumping fuel fine then don't worry about it. That block is used for the 20-35 hp so its already cranking out about as much as you can expect. If you need more power then sell it and buy something bigger.

Re: Question on a Evinrude 35hp??

See what a difference having the model number makes!!! You can get a brand new battery charging kit without the electric starter direct from OMC/BRP for $89.95.
http://shop.evinrude.com/
Click on electronic parts catalog, select OB Accessories from the drop-down list, then follow the prompts.

As said, forget about getting more horsepower unless you are thinking of modifying it for full race. That motor is already working at it's max.
