Question on Achris water pump video

The seal that achris removes from the top housing on the MC-1 to Alpha one water pump video.Is it the 965031,and do I need this seal on hand to do the service? Just trying to cover everything while I am in there.-Blair

Blair, what is your drive setup? do you have an MC-1 upper, and alpha 1 lower? If, so, you need a waterpump kit that has an alpha water pump housing base. Most parts are interchangeable between mc1 and alpha 1 but NOT the water pump base. I could not identify the seal number you posted, but MC-1 and alpha 1 use same seal called a quad seal (because it is a seal with a double edge on two sides. you replace this when drive is split upper from lower. you also need a transom seal kit to reinstall the drive which includes a water passage way o ring, a drive seal that goes on the 6 mounting bolts and a rubber gasket that goes around the ujoint housing. you also will need drive oil to replace the old.

another point. you wont know what else might need replaced until you take apart the drive and inspect it.

Yes (full part number is 26-965031).... I always replace it as a matter of course. Takes about 3 minutes, and it's dead cheap and easy to get at and replace while doing the water pump. And as it's in the exhaust stream, subject to some pretty harsh conditions. I guess what I'm saying it 'it's cheap insurance' (as opposed to water getting into the bottom of the upper drive-shaft and rotting out the splines).....

That's an 'R' drive upper. Sometime the lower isn't the same. When you pull it apart, have a look at the top of the lower drive-shaft. If it has a spring loaded pin in the top of it, it is also an 'R' lower.... No pin means MR or Alpha One.... Here's a picture of what I'm talking about...

If your kit includes a base and you dont have a pin on the top of the lower unit drive shaft, as Chris said, the base wont fit correctly. if you used your R drive serial number to pick your kit. You need an alpha base in this case. The R drive pump base will go on, but it does not seal tight to the shaft and it leaks.

I asked about you having different upper and lower units (many do as these units are over 25yrs old), because you referenced your engine as "having no father" and because your signature says R/MR/Alpha 1

No, he's talking about the plastic baser that goes into the gear housing. Everything from the SS plate up is the same MC-1, R, MR, Alpha One.... The bases are were the difference is...

The kit you have will fit all.... It's only if your base is damaged that you need to be sure of which gear housing you have...

Cool,thanks.Its a lot of leg work just getting all of the things together that I will need to do my yearly service as its my first winter putting a boat to sleep.Next year will be easier but I really couldn't do it without you guys so thank you.-Blair

I usually find it's best to strip down, assess what's needed, then go buying all the parts.... Not going to get caught with any 'nasty surprises'....

Trying to buy parts beforehand can lead to doubling up. Let's say you think you need a shift cable. You buy the cable kit which includes a bellows (because you know you should replace the bellows at the same time ), then while doing the job you find a problem with the uni bellows and the gimbal bearing. Now you need the transom seal kit, but that includes a shift cable bellows. So now you have 2 shift cable bellows.

If you had done the strip down first you would have then been able to buy the transom seal kit and the shift cable kit withOUT the bellows, thus saving you money....

Just something to think about.

It is mc 1/R old style. Which way does the seal go in? And how you you normally install those. Does the spring face up or down?

Ayuh,.... If yer socket allows, pop it onto the extension backwards,...

You'll be pushin' the seal with a Flat face,....
