Question on lower unit

I have a 70hp Mercury Ser#0B274515 I believe its a 88 model year. A buddy of mine has a 75hp Mercury Ser#0A994841 which I believe is a 86 model year.

My question is are the lower units the same. He doesnt want the motor any longer and I was thinking of using the lower unit as a spare if it would fit on my 70hp. Just to have on hand in case mine ever breaks.

Yup, they're both Cam Shift Type II lowers common to "later" 3 & 4 cylinders.
