I'm going (hopefully) be pulling this engine off in a couple of weeks.

The boat has no power. The wiring, in fact, is a bloody mess.

The hydraulic lines have also been fudged.

Never owned an outboard before. So, is there a way to manually lower the motor - a release somewhere? Or, does it have to have power?

You are correct. This thing is a mess. Ther is a manual release on the pump in the boat to lower or raise the motor. Question is, will it turn for you.

Pump in the boat? Will have to find it. Thank you much for the info.

The manual release valve you are looking for is about 1/2" above the vise grips in the picture.

If turning the valve doesn't work, try removing the vise grips.

Be careful. That motor may drop fast.

Don't forget to take the pump.

That knurled knob towards the center-lower part of the pump, turn that out CCW and it should release the pressure. If not you can remove the smaller of the two line on the cylinder that is still hooked up. The wires to the pump will be blue, green and black, these will come from the trim/tilt switch. From the battery to the relays you will just need 12V and the ground.

Re: Question on Mercury Tilt

Had another thread going on this motor trim problem. Can't find it, but I finally got the motor lowered. Wound up bleeding - the starboard side, at least. Nuts were stripped on the port side, so I cut the line. Line was dry as a bone, but motor is lowered. Hope to get it off tomorrow.

Motor looks like it's in pretty good shape:

Flywheel is very stiff, but it turns. Grudgingly.

Typical of the sort of maintenance done through the years - plastic ties holding the fuel lines on:

Few more photos from the 26th:

This bolt needs replacing:

I'm a bit concerned about this crack, and the goobered patch on it:

Had to cut the line to this, then remove the bolt to let it drop with the motor:
