Question on propellers

When replacing a propeller, is it better to get one that fits "naturally" onto the outdrive vs. getting one that requires a hub kit?

I have a Volvo Penta outdrive, and I could buy a Volvo prop for $164, or buy a Michigan Wheel prop + hub kit for $169. Does it make any difference which one I go with?

This is the first propeller I'm replacing, and would appreciate any info.

I have never heard anything bad about hub sytems but I always go on the premise that more parts mean more things to break.

The Volvo prop is probably a higher quality peice, I had one Michigan prop and didn't like it at all, seemed to be really brittle, snapped off half a blade first time out.
Others here really like them and have run a long time with no problems.

I think either is fine but I personally would go with the Volvo part.

Yea, a little bit, thanks. I looked at my boat this morning, hoping to find it had been repaired overnight, but no such luck.

Ayuh,.......

It Doesn't matter in the least......
As long as the Prop,+ It's Hub Kit, fits the drive your installing it on.......

i had trouble with a couple of hub kits fitting me volvo sx drive, finally when with a volvo prop.

Sidechoke- sorry to see the damage, but that is common. I did the same last year. Locally I called around to see about getting it repaired to keep as a spare, but it was at least $75 to repair, so I ordered a new Michigan Wheel for around $85 on line. I also ordered a composite prop as a spare to keep on board- it works great, and costs less than the aluminum. It is sickening at first, but you will be fine. Happens to all of us at one time.

With a new boat this year, I have 3 old props, they are the pitch size I use on the new boat but wrong spline, one SS was over $600 and the used market for it is zip.

I wont buy a prop that does not have the Merc Flo-Torq II hub system. Michigan Wheel and Turning Point both are now using it.
