question on re-power of a 50 classic Merc.

I have a 1986 Merc. classic 50> 45hp Merc. that I would like to replace with a 65 to 85 hp. Merc of the same vintage.

I do not wish to change the harness if not necessary.

I have noticed that my harness has all the wires going directually to the connectors on the engine, all the other older Mercs. that I have seen have a (for lack of a better term) quick connect plug on the outside of the engine.

Does anyone know what years and what horsepower Mercs. used the non quick connect plug...
