I have a little confusion.

I had water intrusion on my 1983' 115hp Evinrude V4.

After a pressure test I noted the leakage was at the shift rod bearing in the cover.

I took it apart but see no obvious O-ring, nor a real place to install one.

I have the factory manual and it just says 'Install the O-ring' with a picture of the underside of the shift rod cover.

It seems to me they figure it is obvious, but all I see on the cover is just a flat protrusion on the underside where the shift rod penetrates with no place to fit an O-ring.

I ordered a new shift rod cover just to be safe as well as a new O-ring, but I wonder what I am missing here? Also does the new shift rod cover come with bushing and O-ring installed? Did not see on the schematic a separate part for the 'bushing' portion but did see the O-ring part.

Any help would be appreciated.

The O ring is inside the cover.

Re: Question on Shift linkage O ring 115hp 1983' Evinrude

thank you

with a big magnifying glass and a bright lot I see a groove in there. If the old O-ring is still in it is worn down flush with bearing wall.

My guess is it deteriorated and fell out in bits and that's why I have water intrusion.

The bearing has a little roughness to it so i ordered a new cover and I guess I'll fight with getting the new o-ring into it when it gets here.

The cover may come with an O ring, but I'm not sure. In any case it's easy to install. Put a little grease inside after you get it in the groove.
