Hi,
I new to boats abnd just bought an 87 190 classic with a mercruiser 165. My question is .... it took a while for me to start the engine this weekend since it was a b it cold out. Is there a choke or something I'm missing ? Obviously theres no way to give it gas during starting because of the neutral safety switch. I tried to wait till it started to catch then shift forward slightly to give it some gas ........ anyway , it there something I'm not doing or missing .... seems like there has to be a better way.

Thanks

I would think that you have a button at the pivot point of your throttle. When you push the button in you can move the throttle and it doesn't engage the drive.

Re: Question on starting 87 190 classic.

you need to operate the throttle forward and back 2 times to set the choke plate properly. First you need to figure out how to disengage the throttle so you can give it gas... not sure how yours is but on my 86 I would grab the throttle handle at the base were it pivots and pull the throttle handle straight out towards the center of the boat to disengage the shifter. .....once you do that move the throttle to full forward, back to stop and repeat....then push throttle handle to maybe a quarter forward....turn key...be ready to take the handle back to center once it starts.

once you are ready to go push the throttle handle back in put it in gear and go.

being that you're new to this like you said...make sure you always run the boat with water to it (muffs) and lower the outdrive when running it on the trailer.

Thanks for your help ..... Yea, figured it all out now ...... unfortunately it's too late to put it in the water. Once I figured out the throttle it started right up .... winterized it and I'm waiting fro spring.

Thanks again.
