Question on using carb boil

I have an 88' Evinrude xp 200. It has the plastic carbs on, hopefully some of you will know what carbs I am talking about. My question is can I put these carbs in a carb boil that I bought from the auto parts store without hurting them? I have always put metal carbs in it to soak but I have always been told not to put plastic or rubber parts in it because they would disintegrate.

So it will destroy the carbs? IS there something else I can soak them in that will be safer? or am I just going to have to depend on carb spray?

I think you can remove the jets from these carburetors and put them in a cleaner.----Make sure you mark down each one as you remove them as they are not always the same.-Size is marked on them.-------What is the motor doing / not doing that makes the carburetors suspect?

Re: Question on using carb boil

I wasn't able to get it started last summer, it was flooding like crazy and I just let it sit until now so I am going to clean everything out and buy rebuild kits since the gaskets look terrible and are tearing in some places, also I found that some plastic washers were missing. Figured if I am going to have them apart better clean everything up good.

I was think of probably going thru all the lines and maybe replacing all fuel lines also. Just a lot of time and extra money but at least I would know that everything form the tank to the carbs would be in good shape.

Soak in Pine Sol or OMC Engine Tuner.

I read of someone else soaking in Varsol. Is this safer than the carb boil, and where can you get it.

I've always used OMC Engine Tuner. It won't hurt the plastic parts if you happen to forget them and does a good job of cleaning.

A ultrasonic work good also, but never soak in a caustic solution.....power tune and compressed air is the best.

I do like the Tuner as mentioned, but honestly if the carbs don't have 3 decades of varnish, and simply need a cleaning, Pine Sol Works great. Name brand Pine Sol, not cheapo version.

That is all I have used for the last 30 or so carbs. A bottle lasts me over a dozen carb dunks. Cheap, and smells nicer than solvents. My wife likes it better anyways.

HighTrim -- Use of Pine Sol. That's for all carbs, like the old 50s stuff I mess with? If so, what kind of mix do you use, or just straight up from the bottle? This would be just a tad safer than the lacquer thinner I'm used to. Thanks.

Yup all carbs. That is why I switched, safer. Most guys mix it 50:50 but I leave it a little stronger. Leaves the shop smelling like a forest too ;)

All good! Thanks, Chris. Will definitely be easier on the hands this spring.
