I want to add a water separator to my pontoon. I have two 6 gallon tanks. I was thinking of mounting it on the back of the fencing between the tanks. Will being open to the sun and rain be a problem? With a 50 hp four stroke should I leave the fuel filter that on it now?

Re: the water separator, I've seen several mounted like that. I don't recall ever hearing about a downside.

Re: the fuel filter, I'd leave it. A clean filter poses little restriction, and could potentially trap some unexpected crud - like a fuel line disintegrating internally.

the only problem you may encounter is rain water rusting the filter (the cheap paint is mostly for advertising). so change the filter every year
