Just bought a new 15' Tempest boat E/W 1996 50hp O/B Merc Force 50. I have read a number of posts regarding fuel octane and lube. One post also states to get alcohol free gas. On my second tank of fuel, I picked up water from the service station. If I can't use any sort of alcohol antifreeze to keep water at bay, how do I keep it in check and how do I get it out of that gas? Also, I notice the the fuel filter on the motor is AFTER the fuel pump. Is this right? Can I also install one in the tank or would this make the motor starve for fuel? Thanks

Re: Question on water in fuel

There are several fuel-water seperator systems out there, Racor is one. Various sizes & styles.
Mount it higher than your fuel tank(s);lower than your carb(s), near the engine and for ease of service;in that order.I'd still get rid of any known bad gas. The seperators are a great thing to have but not 100%

Re: Question on water in fuel

OK I will check on seperators. But is there still another way of getting water out of the gas I have now. 5 gallons of gas around here costs $27cdn and to get rid of this can is one thing, what if it is a common occurance? I know its cheaper to get rid of gas as opposed to repairs, but at this rate it would be better not to go boating at all. Is there any product to test gas for water before I mix it? How about that antifreeze, is it ok to use occasionally? Thanks.

Re: Question on water in fuel

Well, just bought some STP NON_ALCOHOL water remover for premium gas carb engines and decided to go ahead and try a drop. Seems to idle fine and will try a test drive later today. Still, any opinions good or bad appreciated!

Re: Question on water in fuel

Tip your gas can and place an object under it. Let it sit like this for a few days undisterbed. All the water will settle to the lowest point in the can. Put a siphon hose to the lowest point in the can and siphon the water into a clear container. If you siphon a little at a time you'll be able to dump the water and crud. The clear container is to see the water/gas. Stop when you start seeing pure gas.

I use ISo-HEET or seam foam, or even penzoils marine fuel stabalizer, the all help alot, the clean stabalize and help remove the water. Seafoam is the best all around product, Iso-Heet is just water remover.

Thomas
