The service manual states:

"Apply Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the small hole gasket. Place the small hole gasket, the
face plate and the large hole gasket onto the gear case.

NOTE: Add Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the gasket to seal it and prevent water from seeping
into the gear housing."

Do I coat BOTH sides of the small hole gasket? What about the large hole gasket does it need sealant?

Just want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Thanks

Question #1... What manual are you using? I have never seen anything like that in a Merc manual...

NEVER use any sealant on water pump gaskets... I HATE people who do that!!! Makes it a god-awful job to pull apart the next time.... And don't use anything on the leg gasket either, for the same reason....

Yes Chris, it's in the OEM manual. Page 3B-75. Never have understood why though. They get water in that cavity around the impeller. I don't use it either for the exact reasons you mention. Funny thing is, Merc doesn't use any on the new drives either, same with the Perfect seal on the bolt threads. after a few years in salt water, they can be corroded in the housing and impossible to get out without heat and damage to other plastic items around it.
If that boat used in salt water, and has sat for 8 years you can bet money there is going to be problems getting those bolts out. DO NOT break those 4 bolts.

So use it on the bolts, but not the gaskets?

That's what I have been doing on customers boats since 91 when the Gen II drive came out, no problems.

1992 Alpha 1 Gen II SN OD665768.
I know this is a old thread but it pertains to exactly what I am doing right now. Since I am a first time boat owner working on my first engine I try to follow the Merc Manual exactly so I don't mess things up unless you kind folks on here tell me to do something different. What do I put on the o-rings? Should I put a little lubricate of any kind on the little O-ring before I install. I watched a video on YouTube where the guy just sprayed everything with WD-40. I went out an bought several of the sealants and lubricants yesterday that were called out in the procedure for reinstalling water pump.

Just want to do the right thing.
Thanks for the help.

Even though it is germaine, you need to copy and paste your post into a new thread. Start fresh with your own personal thread! Nothing better!:D I'll look forward to seeing your new thread, and the answers will come flooding in... KTB
