question re: 35 HP long shaft to short shaft conversion

Hello,

I have a 1975 Evinrude 35 HP. The lower unit was bad and I found another lower unit that I plan to install. The new lower unit, however, is a long shaft. Is it going to be hard to swap the shifter and drive shaft out to accomodate the new lower unit? Do I have to go into the lower unit to change the shifter?

I guess what I'm wondering is whether or not it would be easier to just use a jack plate for smaller engines if changing out the shift rod is too involved?
