First of all I want to thank those that replied to my question about my old 4hp Merc a while back. I love this forum!!! So polite and informative!!!! Thank you!

My elderly neighbor gave me an old Eska 9hp sear motor. It runs great!!!! However, for some reason, he "welded it so that it would stay in forward because I keep breaking shear pins". Those are his exact words. When I start the boat, I have to be pointed the direction I want to go because it is always in forward. lol I would like to correct this and put it back to how it is supposed to be; starting in neutral, forward, reverse.....I have no idea where the weld would be? Can someone please tell me where I should look and how to fix this? I suspect grinding will be involved.

BTW, shear pins breaking are not an issue any more. I bought the proper ones for it instead of using brazing rod:)

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it has a reverse? alot of the older models you spin it 180 and go in reverse.

Re: Question re old Eska 9hp

Actually, no. I just assumed it did. I have been using it the last two days and boy she runs good!! It has what I would think of as a Neutral and when put i fwd, it is trolling speed. but in "N" it goes full speed. Very weird and not good when first starting. Otherwise the old girl chugs along beautifully
