I recently came across an Elgin outboard and am trying to gather information on it. I have looked through reference books, but the particular model does not show up. It is a 2hp part number 571.58211. It appears to be a mid to late 1950's model. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You!

Re: Question Regarding History of an Elgin Outboard

According to the 3rd edition of Peter Hunn's "The Old Outboard Book" your Elgin is a 1954 model....2 hp is right on the money. Elgins were a Sears house brand manufactured by the West Bend Aluminum Company out of Wisconsin. Fix it up and run it. Good luck.

West Bend became Chrysler became Force. You might be able to find parts through a Merc dealer, but don't hold your breath.

Those late 50s 2hp WestBends were very durable and user friendly engines...believe it or not.
