questions about 1990 four winns?

I just bought a 1990 four winns 190 freedom. It has a 4.3 omc cobra engine 190 hp. Im new to this engine so my questions are:

1. Ive read about similar boats getting up to or over 50 mph with this engine. I can only get up to 45mph according to GPS with 3 people in the boat. What can i do to make it go faster.

2. When pulling a skier it seems sluggish trying to get them up out of the water avg. person 5'11 200lbs. once they are up the boat just takes off. So I think my problem is getting out of the gate quicker any suggestions?

3. The throttle seems like it needs to be greased up its rough moving it forward or backwards. Is this something that needs to be done or just replaced?

4. What type of prop would be best to have on it?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

45mph on a boat that size with the load you describe does not sound too bad. The rough shifting might actually be the cables going out. As Bubba suggested, give more info so someone can help you determine what prop you need.

Like I stated I have just bought it only had it ou twice so far if memory serves me right i think it was about 5500-6500 rpms if that isnt specific enough i will check it out this weekend. The boat shifts fine the throttle just feels rough when moving it. thanks

5500-6500 is way to high. If you are actually doing that RPM, you need to step up to the next higher pitch prop.

Depending on who makes the prop it may have the size or a model number which you may be able to Google and give you an idea. If all else fails, a prop shop can tell you what the pitch is. I would also consider double checking the tach with a shop tach so you really know what RPM you are running. You don't want to run the boat that high.

Personally, I never run my engine over 4000 RPM for more than a few seconds. Your engine will last a LOT longer if you keep it under that.

I have the same boat! (1990 fOUR WINNS 190 FREEDOM) i have found that a 15 1/4 x17 is a good prop. But let me know if you have found a better one!

Old thread . . . it is best to start a new thread or send the OP a PM.
