I am looking at a Crest Pontoon boat that has a 90hp Mercury outboard motor. It is a 2000 or 2001 2 cycle with oil reservoir. Other than knowing that Mercury is the best motor, is this one of their better motors? What info can you tell me about this motor? Any info would greatly be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Larry

If you know that Mercury is the best motor, why is it you are asking whether the 90 is a good motor? My current boat has a 75 HP (same block as the 90) and I consider it to be a good motor. Is it the best? Not in my view. An Eviinrude E-tec wins that comparison hands down.

I don't consider the Merc triple 90 a good engine, Larry. They are notorious for rough idle and hesitating coming off idle.

My son had one (2000) that he bought new and he hated it.

Were I in the market it would be etec or 4 stroke.

I have an '02. Rough idle I think is due to large bore cylinders and only 3. Heavy, high pitched props, cause what's called "clutch dog rattle" which is a clunking sound in the gearbox when at idle speeds. Merc says not a problem. Mine is a little hard to get going "in the morning" on cold days....doesn't want to get outta bed.

But other than that, it doesn't break, runs like a scalded ape, restarts instantly after the first of the day, and sips gas...on my boat anyway......and it's pretty.

My 2c,

Mark

Thanks to all! I am going to take a close look at the boat early next week and take it out for ride. Then go from there.
