i will def prime it, the cam is the old cam so shouldnt that already be broken in?

if it is a roller cam it will be fine...if it is a flat tappet cam you MUST put the lifters back in the EXACT same bore they came out of...if you mix even 1 lifter the cam will eat itself in a very short amount of time...

well we didnt keep them in order, and after we realized hey were supposed to stay in order i took the cam and lifters to a machine shop and they looked it over and they said the cam looked close to new and the lifters still all had matching radis on them, said it would be fine to put back together

so I take it that it is a flat tappet cam...? (ie: non-roller)

if so dont be surprised if it goes by-by in short order...there is a reason the lifters must stay matched to the lobe...not every lifter bore is in the exact place and angle on every lobe...

there are slightly different angles on the lobes to hold the cam in place...this is what keeps it from moving forwards and back wards and keeps the lifters spinning...this is not present in roller cams...

I can not say whether your cam will go flat or not -- we all hear about camshaft break-in. We have discussed oil additives and diesel oil with additional additives that may help break-in and general engine life. :)

Breaking in a camshaft and lifters has to do with the hardening of the camshaft and lifters wear surface --- nothing more --- once this hardening is done, it is done. Lifters leak oil around them and this oil runs down the bottom of the lifter and lubes the lobe --- the camshaft would not last very long at idle if it didn't.

We see adds like ---> "Each half-ounce of Cam-shield? is guaranteed to deliver an additional 1600 ppm of Zinc (from ZDDP) to a quart of your favorite engine oil. If you wish to add 800 ppm of Zinc (from ZDDP) to a quart of your favorite engine oil, simply add a quarter-ounce of Cam-shield? brand engine oil treatment to each quart that you wish to treat. Please see the Technical section on Engine Oil that discusses today's API SM/ILSAC GF-4 engine oils to learn the recommended treat rate of Cam-shield? for you. When using a treat rate of one half ounce of Cam-shield? per quart of engine oil, the 4 ounce bottle will treat 8 quarts of your favorite engine oil and the 8 ounce bottle will treat 16 quarts of your favorite engine oil.""

Found here : http://www.cam-shield.com/acatalog/How_to_use.html

Some people use motor oil on their parts and nothing more to assemble an engine and have good results.

I use assembly lube with molly and good oil with additional additives.

I would not worry about a cam and lifters that are used ---- hardened --- or new lifters on and old cam, etc.,

One old man's opinion

i used plenty of assembly lube on everything, so really the only thing i am breaking in is the rings and bearings?

I may be a crazy old man use my advice with due consideration :D

"Iboat forums are a place for boaters to come and visit with each other, a friendly place to sit and chat. iboats welcomes new members who want to share their stories and discuss events, and maintain a safe boat. We like to keep this area welcoming, civil and polite."

I have looked at your engine pictures --- they look good --- I feel you know what you are doing and "learned" about swapping lifters :) We are all ignorant until we learn --- I am no exception.

Yes, you are breaking in your rings and bearings --- bearings ride on a film of lube / oil and do not really break-in. Most wear on bearings comes from cold starting and other factors not related to normal engine operation. However, they do present wear with use.

I see no worries and hope you the best of luck.
