Ok, I have my 83 johnson 50hp ready to put back together. I have a few questions. Do I need to use a sealer when putting the impellor assembly back together, as far as sealing the metal plate and the housing cap? I talked to a marine mechanic, and he says he never uses a sealer, just bolts it back on and goes. Also I have never worked on a motor new enough to have a thermostat like this one, so I need to know what to expect as far as telling if it is working correctly when I start it in a barrel of water. I did drain the lower unit tonight and found that there was some water in there, but from what I hear on here, 90% of the time, new drain seals will cure that. Am I right, or do I need to do further investigation?

I do not use a sealer on that part.

Your engine has a telltale stream that is located on the Starboard side of the lower engine cowl pan. That will tell you that your water pump is working. It does not necessarily mean the engine is cooling.

I suggest you run it with the cover off. As it is running, you should be able to hold your fingers on the top cylinder head for a few seconds. Not under load, it will develop temps. around 145 degrees.

When the thermostat opens, you will probably see more water exiting the exhaust relief ports on the back of the midsection just below the lower cowl pan. There are two holes there.

Yes, the fill/drain plug seals are the most likely cause of water intrusion. Keep an eye on it.

i put a little gasket sealer in the groove for the rubber gasket , just to hold it in place while installing. if running on muffs, doubt you get water out the exhaust relief ports.

I don't run muffs. Usually I put it in a big barrell and it usually works after a few seconds.
