Questions about Johnson 18 Sea Horse

Just got a 1953 Lone Star and a Johnson 18 Sea Horse. My questions are: Where should I be checking for water that is exiting the engine? (Is there a pee hole) Is it normal to have fuel/oil mix coming out of the exhaust? What is the fuel/mix ratio? How much smoke should exist in the exhaust? Thank you for any and all the help!

Hi, Biloxi.<br /><br />Your mix and tell tale depends on the year of the engine. Before 1964 it was 24:1. After 1964 it is 50:1. Post the model number. Then we can tell what mix to use.<br /><br />It is normal to see unburned fuel/oil in the exhaust, and the exhaust will normally be a bit smokey, mostly on start-up.<br /><br />Let us know that model number. Post it as a reply here.

There is no pee hole as with other brands. Some water will spray out of the exhaust relief hole in the upper rear of the midsection. After the thermostat opens, you should have a moderate spray of warm water out that hole.<br /><br />With a 24:1 mix, expect mucho smoke. But, that's normal with a pre-1964 engine.

Hello Lark40 and JB,<br />Thank you for your reply! Model #fd14....Serial #2028292. A local shop here had told me that the Johnson is a 1960. The owner of the shop had also advised me to run a 50:1 mix because todays oils are far superior and would lubricate sufficiently as a 50:1 mix. He had also told me to use only a quality (Johnson 2 cycle) oil. Indicating that less expensive (cheap) oils were not as good in quality. This motor has sat for two years so I installed a new impeller, thermostat, plugs, and prop shear pin. It did fire on the fourth pull, however it did smoke quite heavily.
