i have a 1965 johnson 6hp. i got it running last night after some minor carb work. i only ran it for about 20 seconds because i didnt see any water coming out of the the exahaust/water output hole. does water instantly start coming out of the whole or does a thermostat have to open? if the water pump does need to be replaced, do i need to change oil in the lower unit? will there be oil as soon as i drop the unit or is it contained in a case? if anyone could shine some light on this process for me and ive also read how you have to rotate the prop until the little pins in the shaft lines up btu if someone could also explain this in more detail
thanks

Re: questions about water pump johnson 6hp

Water should start spitting from the idle relief openings within a few seconds of starting the motor as long as the motor is deep enough in the test barrel. Seeing the water at the ports is independent of the thermostat. Idle exhaust port water is an indication that the water pump is working. You don't have to replace the lower unit lube when you drop the lower unit to service the water pump. The water pump sits on top of the lower unit. The top of the drive shaft is splined and mates with the crankshaft. Be sure to lube the drive shaft splines with grease and replace the o-ring (if your motor calls for one) at the top of the drive shaft, it helps to keep water from entering the drive shaft/crank junction and rusting the two together. Rust at this junction makes dropping the lower unit in the future a real pain.

If this is a new to you motor , or you don't know when the last time the water pump was replaced, do it now and document the date the work was done.

All of the questions you asked are covered in the service manual. Do yourself a favor and order the manual. You can buy one here at iboats.
