Bought my first boat, 14.5 foot springbok with a 50 horse Johnson with console (about 1990 or 91) ... I have a few questions....

#1 The owner of the boat mentioned that the beeper acts up sometimes, but only on startup. For instance, with the engine cold and you turn the key to on, it beeps in one continuous tone and won't stop (obviously not overheating) ... If I turn the ignition back off and on a couple times, it finally stops (in the on position) ..... what do I do to troubleshoot this alarm?????? The previous owner was an older guy who obviously took care of this boat, the engine runs amazingly well and starts first shot. I need to make sure I get this fixed or at least confirm it's working properly.

#2 How long is 2 stroke oil good for if it's been sitting in the injection container???? it's been there since last summer ...

#3 Where can I download a manual for this engine without paying for it... anyone have any links?

Any help would be appreciated. This looks like a great site!!!!

Re: questions ... new owner of a used Johnson

I don't have the owners manual but it's an OMC console ..... i thought it was pretty well standard with the beep tones/solid tone. (long tone= overheating, intermittent= low oil) .... but mine has the long tone even when the engine is cold and hasn't been started. If I turn it on and off a few times it stops.....

usually manufacturers make owners manuals available but I guess the engine is too old.

Re: questions ... new owner of a used Johnson

Start off by locating the horn, likely in the remote control. Find the TAN coloured wire and disconnect it. Does it still beep? If so, you will need a new horn. Bad news is, they are not cheap for what they are. If the beeping stops, your trouble lies elsewhere. Plug the TAN wire back in, and start troubleshooting. This is done by removing the TAN coloured wire from various sensor components on your outboard, such as the heat sensors, VRO, etc... When the beeping stops after removing the TAN wire from a particular component, that component is faulty and needs replacing.

Also post your model number so that we can give you an accurate year of manufacture, so that you get proper parts/manual, etc... Once you get the proper year of manufacture, check ebay for a used service manual. It will pay for itself a million times over.

Let us know how you do.

ok, obviously the first letter is the country code but I can't find the 'becec' part of the outboard. Does anyone know the year of this thing so I can order a manual?

The next time you turn the key to ON and the horn does a continuous sound, disconnect the wires from the oil tank that are located in the motor pan. It is likely the electronics inside the oil pickup assembly are going flakey.

Re: questions ... new owner of a used Johnson

I've been so busy the past week that I haven't even had the chance to throw it in the water ... damn.

But I did start the motor 2 days ago (with muffs) and this is what I found. Turn key to on, continuous beep (does not stop) .... turn key to start, engine runs and beeping stops, then 2 seconds later I get beep beep beep then that stops and nothing happens again and the motor can keep running without a warning. Is this ok?

I need to know if the OMC throttle assembly beeps continuously until you turn it over .... or is it supposed to be silent.
