I need to replace a 175hp Evinrude Ficht on my 23 ft deckboat. I have to go used in the 5-7k price range. I've found several that fit the budget but not sure which one is better. Any advice you guys can give is great.

Option 1 - 2003 Merc 200 EFI
Option 2 - 2002 Yama 200 HPDI
Option 3 - 2001 Merc 225 Optimax
Option 4 - 2004 Johnson 225 4-stroke

I'm leaning towards the 225 Optimax just because of the additional HP but not sure if it will make that much difference in performance. The boat is rated for 225.

Man, any advice would be great in choosing a used motor in the 200-225 range made in 2000 or earlier would be FANTASTIC.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Re: questions on 200/225 motors

Well, my choices would be the Yammy or the Johnny(Suzuki).

The Yamaha HPDI system is the only DFI I know about that had zero teething problems, and Yamaha has a very high customer satisfaction rating. Quality service seems to be available everywhere.

BRP has stopped marketing the rebadged Suzuki 4 strokes as Johnsons, but Johnny dealers are still certified to service them. Even better, Suzi dealers can and will service them, too. Besides, I just love Suzuki 4 strokes.

The Merc EFI is obsolete technology, but it works, and I am still suspicious of the Optis because of many horror stories.

The 225 optimax is not bad at all, but I would go with the Yamaha ......
