I have a 1984 35hp Mercury. It idled poorly, figured I'd clean the carb, wasn't that dirty, but it's cleaner now. There is a small hole in the welch plug that I believe the last guy used to remove it and I used it to remove the plug also. I think the plug and the hole should be sealed(epoxy or silicone) after it's reinstalled. Is that correct, also it looks like the last guy used something like pipe dope to seal the screw in plugs any idea what that would be and is it necessary? thanks

No sealer of any kind should be used when assembling a carb and there should not be any holes in the welsh plugs.

I've been reading on the forum of people using nail polish on the welch plug after installing it. Is that insure it doesn't fall out or so it doesn't leak air? thanks for the reply

The nail polish is used to make sure the small welch plugs do not leak air into the carb passages that the plug is in. JMO

That's what I thought. I reinstalled the welch plug and put a thin coat of epoxy over it. I'll test it tomorrow.
Thanks Tinkerr
