So I rebuilt my 1965ish 45HP West Bend(Kinda), cleaned carb, new fuel pump diaphragm and gasket, new starter, new impeller, new points, new plugs, everything else tested works good. Been out on lake a few times runs good but has a lot of starting issues. Few questions, what is the flot next to carb for and what should it be set at? Yesterday we had issue after issue starting, i had to adjust the throttle sometimes and open it a touch to get her started also would have to adjust carb pin 50 times and sometimes float it seemed to start her, in the end starter was too hot to start andi had to get towed in :( any help on this engine or rebuilding carb or adjusting float would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Questions on my West Bend

Please post some close detail Pics related to your questions.

1. Mainly carb and any while it was down (as showing the float ?level? with the seam if that is the correct adjustment).
2. Any action seen in the glass fuel bowl while priming? Is primer bulb getting hard priming?
3. Amy signs of fuel in the carb while priming. I
4. Is there a choke plate active and closed when trying to start?
5. Will manually spraying 50:1 premix in the carb as a prime help it to start?
6. What is the compression per cyl?
7. Do you have a good blue spark?
8. Points are set at .020?

Tell Us More About ?Her?! LOL For A Break....

Primer is getting hard
Fuel is in carb when priming

trgndf?Good?/Fire/Fuel/Compression should make it go. What are we missing?

1. I?ll guess something with the carb.

2. Have you checked to see if the reeds are good?

3. Cranking should you feel some vacuum at the carb????????????

Re: Questions on my West Bend

Do you have a manual or have combustion engine experience? I am not that experienced with reed valves vs exhaust and intake valves (which serves the same purpose) with a feeler gauge clearance involved. My understanding is A reed valve in the carb manifold will let the fuel mixture in but not out. If they are damaged the fuel processing is affected. I hope this helps and others will jump in here.

Re: Questions on my West Bend

The reedvalves act as a checkvalve. Each cyl. has two sets of reedvalves and they are located in the manifold behind the carb. It is pedals made of stainlessteel.
When the piston in lets say #1 cyl. is moving up there will build up a vaccum in the crankcase in cyl.#1. The reedvalves open up and fuelmix will sucks in to the crankcase. When the piston moves down the reedvalves close due to there will build up a overpressure in the crankcase and the fuelmixture then presses up thrue the intakeports in the powerhead to the consumptionchamber.

Re: Questions on my West Bend

1. Did you find the reeds after Nordin?s Good Info and were they good?
2. When did the Eng last run good? What do you think is causing the current issues and why??
3. Pics will help! ?Few questions, what is the flot next to carb for and what should it be set at?? A Pic would help ID this question and possibly other issues?
