Questions on Rustoleum paint.......

Decided to go with the Rustoleum line.....and this is my first experience in buying paint other than rattle can.......First question: Do I really need bottom side paint for bottom? (bottom will be painted turquoise, 15 ft alum boat, small lakes, fresh water and mostly trailered)..second question: Where can I get Rustoleum Marine paint and have it mixed to a turquoise?... I'm located in Mid- Michigan

You don't need bottom paint on a trailered boat. You don't really need Rustoleum "Marine" paint either.

So what "brand" of Rustoleum will work?..,, The choices are mind-boggling foe an inexperienced painter. I will be rolling it and prepping and priming the metal correctly.

Ok Here's my recommended formula for Rustoleum Paint for Roll n' Roll application.
This Should yield one THIN coat on a 14-16 foot boat hull. For aluminum boats use alodine or a Self Etching Primer on ALL bare aluminum spots and Rustoleums Bare Metal Primer on the rest. If you have Deep sides you may need to adjust the amount of Paint you buy. IF your boat is NOT left in the water for MORE than 3-4 days at a time, this will work fine. This is NOT for boats left in the marina for the season.

This is for Roll n' Roll Application

Final sand with 180 grit and wipe down with acetone.
Two coats of Primer. Wet Sand with 320 grit between coats. Wipe down with acetone
Do NOT put Hardener in the Primer.
Roll n' Roll technique is the same. Thin coats!!!

2 cups Paint
NOTE: This does not come in a MYRIAD of colors. However you can TINT your own by using Artists Acrylic OILS from any Art supply store. Cut it with Acetone and then mix it in. I made "Baby Blue" for mine doing this. Worked Great. You can GOGGLE how to tint paint to get the colors you'll need for the shade you want. It is NOT THAT HARD, NOT EASY, but not that hard.

1/4 cup of ACETONE or if the temp is over 80 degrees use Mineral Spirits
1 oz of Hardener (1/8 cup)(Sold @ Tractor Supply Stores)
Mix paint, Thinner and Hardener "Off & ON" for a 30 minute period, to let the Hardener "COOK" in the Paint

Wet roller with paint an roll out about 4-6 sqare feet. If you can HEAR the paint (Sticky Sound)you are rolling too long. Put the first roller in a Plastic bag and use another roller. wet it out but wring out almost all of the paint and then Re-roll the area you just painted. Use a very LIGHT stroke and the paint should lay down with NO Bubbles!. Put this roller in the bag and use the other roller again. Repeat this process untill the boat is painted. Always do the re-roll with a damp roller with very little paint in it and LISTEN. You will hear the sound that lets you know when it's time to stop. It's kind of a sticky sound.

Let the first coat dry for minimum of 4 hours.
Wet sand with a Scotch Brite pad. Wipe down with Acetone.
Apply 2nd & 3rd Coats Same as First.

This guy use this forumula and technique on his "Tinny" and it came out pretty good I think....

Great info!...thanks...so you use gloss paint and not semi-gloss?...and could a paint store mix the color for me?.... I am looking for a turquoise blue and have ZERO experience tinting paint....

also I'm stripping the boat to bare metal because of a peeling paint job by a PO....so I'll be using Zinc Chromate ,,,after the zinc I'll use a metal filler primer...do I still want 2 coats of the metal filler primer or will one be enough because of the ZC?

You'll have to be the judge on the primer. I like two coats. The ZC should be a very light coating, as will the Bare Metal Primer. 3 light coats should NOT be a problem.

Nope Paint stores will NOT tint Rustoleum Paint. I had NO experience tinting paint either but I made my Baby Blue. Course it was pretty easy just added Rustoleum blue to the while until I got the color I wanted. To get turquoise you will need Blue and Green. Buy a Quart of Blue and a Pint of Green if they sell it by the pint. If not you'll have to buy a qt. I would experiment first by doing this... 2 tablespoons of blue and 1 tablespoon of green and see what you get. Keep adjusting and noting the ratio until you get it the shade you want then increase accordingly. Let it DRY to make sure it is the same. You really should be able to get what you want. If you want it lighter then add a little white. It is NOT that hard to do. Get in there and TRY!!!!!!

Ok I'll try it!...If I use ZC, than I dont need Bare metal primer, correct?............also is gloss or semi-gloss the way to go for top coats?

I would use the BMP also. The ZC GRIPS the Aluminum and then the Primer GRIPS the Paint.

FOR ME, I Like the HIGH GLOSS on the Top side. You can use either, I just prefer that Shiny WET look.
