Do I need to get some kind of gasket sealer for the cover plate? How is the rubber gasket oriented?

Thanks!

The rubber gasket # 310,058 fits around the flared edge of the thermostat so that rubber is on both sides when the thermostat is seated.

No thermostat. That explains the smokiness. Should I use Locktite Blue on the bolts? They have something on them.

Pointy end down, right? It doesn't look right.

Thanks. That is exactly how I had it. That diagram was very useful for me and for those using the search feature in the future. I looked and couldn't find one.

I couldn't get it to pump water out of the main exhaust port. Either I didn't have enough water in the garbage can, or it doesn't pump water out of that port (1/2 way down the outdrive shaft) until the stat opens. Got a new garbage can and will try again tomorrow.

I can already tell it is going to really improve my idle, No lean sneeze at all.

Why didn't my mechanic notice this? I told him to replace the impeller, but since he didn't charge me for it I assume he just inspected it. That job is next.

The main exhaust squirts water all the time. Idles down much better, seems quieter, still smokes, but not quite as much at idle. I doubt it has gotten hot enough to burn off all the crap from my many decarb attempts. After my starter rope replacement, I can now start it with my left hand.
