I have a 91 magnum 40 on which I have replaced the trigger, stator, and power pack. Now I need to set the timing. My ebay manual glazes over a few things and basically mentions the use of a timing light.

I have reset timing in older distributor type mercs but the flyhweels were keyed the the shaft, not a hub.

Do I not need to determine how far a certain cylinder is from TDC first? I have a dial indicator I use for this on all of my other engines. If so does any one know which cylinder and how many inches above TDC?

I do not know how to use a timing light. Do I hook it up and rotate the flywheel on the hub and look for a light (like a buzz box is used on points)? Or does the motor have to be running and I reset the trigger linkage.

I am going back to the manual now and doing google searches. You can tell I am out of my realm of knowlege on this one. Any help with instructions or how to on this process is greatly appreciated.

It's timed using a timing lite, first you need to run the fuel out of the engine or use a spark gap for all 4 cyls. startup while timing would be a disaster. attach the lite to #1 sparkplug wire and use a remote start buttom to spin the engine, it should be timed at 25 +or- 3 degrees BTDC at max. spark advance.
