Questions regarding a boat that I am looking at.

It is a 1987 Mark Twain 195 MTC.

Boat looks solid needs some cosmetic work. All of the wood needs to be refinished and the doors to the cabin need some repair. Also the cushions are shot in the cabin and water got in from being poorly covered and their is a bad mildew problem. The owner says it is a Volvo Penta motor and stern drive but all I could see was 4.3 Liter OMC and an OMC Cobra Sterndrive.

Questions

1. How hard will it be to clean the mildew out of the interior carpeting? It also appears to have mildew in the overhead liner. I'd rather not have to rip out everything and replace.

2. Could someone help me identify the motor and sterndrive a little better? Any known issues? The motor looked very clean and the owner stated that his neighbor winterized it for him.

3. The owner said that the last oil change was two summers ago and that the boat saw little use last year. Upon checking the oil it appeared to be a light brown with a green tint to it. Not sure if that would be considered milky or just old with some condensation moisture in it. I am used to used oil looking dark brown. If there is water in the oil what can this be a symptom of and how serious (expensive)?

4. Like I said the motor and compartment were very clean and the engine looke well maintained.

I realize that it is an older boat and will need some work, just don't want to get in over my head with a complete resto. Oh yea.. the transom appeared to be very solid no wiggle in the stern drive or swim platform. If I do this deal I am trading a 2005 Arctic Cat Snowmobile that sees no use and my wife hates. Even trade.

Any info that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Take tashasdaddy's advise... he really knows what he's talking about.

... me? I'd get it, but then I'd end up sinking at least 10 times what it'll ever be worth fixing it and refixing it, and spend countless hours being covered in itchy fiberglass dust. Oh wait, that's what I did... you better take tashasdaddy's advise. :D

In addition to whats been said, if there is a mildew problem, and the boat has been wet, there is likely to be rot in the deck and/or stringers somewhere, which isn't easily fixed. Doesn't sound like the rest of the boat has been well maintained, so its strange that the engine would be nice and clean. Plus, I'm not sure I'd trust the neighbor's winterizing job.

Agreed -- if you aren't up to a restoration (an expensive one at that) you had best let this one go for all the reasons stated. If you think your wife disliked the snowmobile, in about six months and still not in the water she will not only hate the boat but you as well for dragging the &$@! thing home.

Thanks guys, you confirmed my gut instinct. I already told the guy with the boat that I would take a pass. And to confirm my instincts even more he offered to throw in $500 cash.

I will wait for the rightboat or some snow!

Sounds like you made the right decision on taking a pass on this one......but being as i own a 1995 19' Mark Twain I thought I'd add a few things. That is a heavy boat, they were built very solid. Also, I'm sure there has to be we floatation foam so figure the thing weights about as much as a tank. The 4.3L would struggle at best. Mine has the 305 (5.0L) and it does fine, but not a lot to spare.

Having taken the deck out and removed the foam in mine I can tell all that Mark twain made a very solid boat! I've seen a few different brands from that era with the deck torn out and the insides of the MT was so much more solid and heavy duty. I've heard it is bery similar to a Wellcraft in hull and stringer design. Just make sure you have plenty of engine to push it!
