Quick Block/Manifold Drain?

A lot of local guys I talk to run their trailered I/O's all winter (so they can go winter Chinook salmon fishing). Winter is short here but it gets down to -15 C or so on occasion. I was told that to keep going out all winter they do a "quick drain" while at the ramp after each trip. This consists of pulling the plugs on either side of the block, pulling the hoses off the bottom of the manifolds, pulling the front hose off the power steering cooler and fully lowering the leg (and raising back up).

Is that enough or is there something else I missed?

Re: Quick Block/Manifold Drain?

Howdy,

When you do that ensure that you use a small piece of wire or a slim screwdriver etc to poke in the hole(s) to clear any rust flakes or other debris that could prevent the block and manifolds from draining completely.

They might be talking about the "quick drain" system that Mercruiser started putting on engines a few years back.

Those systems could get you in serious trouble a few years after the block and manifolds start to slough off rusty scale inside. The rust flakes will plug every drain and can sometimes cause the block to hold enough water to crack it.

You can't be too careful...

the heat exchanger must be drained and the 2 raw water pump hoses on the bottom of engine if you have them
