"do the jets need to be backed out some to work right?"

heres how I got in this situation...
The boat was running pretty good then one night we were heading back to the dock and a wire fell off a coil pack, its a 1983 johnson 90, we rode back in with someone holding the wire on the coil. next day I changed the coil and it still had a bad miss, figured I fouled the plugs so I put new plugs in. motor was still missing... took the carb off and cleaned everything, took the jets out and put them back in, didnt think about it until now but I just unscrewed them and screwed them completely back in. after cleaning the carb it ran worse and the choke solenoid made it rev really high if I used it. after drawing a blank I checked the spark and noticed the cyl under the one the wire fell off of had no spark either, new coil there and it still doesnt run right. do the jets need to be backed out some to work right? new to outboards but I have worked on plenty of cars before this.

New Plugs
New Coils
Cleaned Carbs
Fresh Gas 50:1 mix.
Compression 115-120psi on all 4

Not sure about the carb question however. if you ahve changed the coil and cleaned the carb. I was reading in Clymer that you may need to reset timing after changing coil and cleaning carb. not sure how right this is for your motor but it says that for all 79-84 models.

Re: Quick carb question...

Short answer: no. The carb jets should screw all the way in and be snug. No adjustments to the jets themselves. Any adjustment, if there is one, comes from the needle valve within the jet. Main jet will not have any adjustment. Idle jet will have a needle valve adjustment.

But, slow down. A bad coil is no reason to go playing with a carburetor.
Get yourself back together and test each spark plug wire for spark. Work on the appropriate coil pack. Ensure spark plug wires go to the correct cylinder. A miss is likely to still be caused by bad ignition.

I did check the spark, after changing the coil it wouldnt start so I assumed it was the carb. I changed the other bad coil and now have a nice spark over a 1/2" gap. thanks for letting me know about the jets, I was kicking myself in the *** for that one lol

Looks like rusty water? That may have collecte din the bowl. If you dont have spark on one bank you my have a bad stator or powerpack. If you ever drop a coil agian just run one cyl down slowly. Thats a good way for some one to get the **** shocked oout of them, unless they used big pliers but still not very safe for a person to hang off the back of the boat while running. It wont hurt anything to be down a cyl assuming your still getting fuel to that cyl.

haha they got a couple shocks, they were using some plastic pliers I use while fishing... where would that rusty water have come from? is that enough to affect the way the motor is running?

and btw, I have spark on all 4 cyls. now I have tested it with a tester over 1/2" gap and it was good

Clymer is lost or you misread it.

Rusty water usually comes from the gas tank, you might check it for water.

Update, decided to take the boat out of the water to put it back on the trailer and take it to a shop... the motor bogged and missed like hell until I gave it a little gas, up top it runs smooth, better than before the coil mishap. as soon as it gets off plane and slows down its back to missing again.

had a full can of seafoam in the tank, only about 10 gallons... isnt that stuff suppose to evaporate any water that was in your tank? I bought a new fuel filter for the boat, didnt have one on there before.

Re: Quick carb question...

Rust can also come from a carb if there is steel in it, from accumulated water in the carb.

well it was only a couple days since i took the carb out before this last time so I highly doubt its rusty water, from in my tank or the carb honestly...

Re: Quick carb question...

adjusted the idle to back to the correct mark it wouldnt idle right because it was dumping fuel at idle, adjusted the throttle cable to the new mark and she runs great all the way from idle to wot... before I changed everything the boat was topping out at 27mph and just felt sluggish with acceleration... tonight had it up to 36mph and it responded great... such a difference.
