hi again everyone. quick question. i have a 89 85hp force. it runs good except once in a while it dies and the starter will not crank. i have not had much time to troubleshoot it yet. my question is.... does this motor need a charged battery to stay running? if the charging system is not working and i have the tunes on and i kill the battery while running, will the motor quit? thanks.

The engine should be charging the battery during operation. If your battery is draining, and you motor then cutting out, you have problems. Unfortunately, that's all I can tell you, but I'm sure you'll get more responses, which will either confirm or refute what I'm saying, and with luck, they'll be able to give you an idea why.

you should not disconnect battery with motor running. you might fry ignition, stereo, depth finder, etc.

intermittent starter failure is usually starter problem. intermittent failure to charge is usually a loose and/or corroded connector. examine not only the posts but the cable fittings too. inadequate charging is usually secure but corroded connections. However, inadequate charging can also be related to stator system.

The really, really good news for you is that sea-way marine has your complete stator/ignition/charging/trigger system as a new surplus liquidation for $125. At that price it's worth putting one on shelf even if you don't need it.

Yes, your motor has a built in charging system, no don't ever disconnect your battery when it's running, you could damage this. The motor, & boat usually have seperate battery cables, heavier cable for the motor, and all boat accessories are usually on the thinner battery wires. Actually the Force motors usually overcharge your battery, check the battery water regularly. Also, Force engines have a tendency to flood easily, then become hard to crank, if this is the case, take out your spark plugs, and clean them off with starting fluid, carb cleaner or a clean rag, then put them back in, and retry it. Use the choke sparingly! and usually not at all, once the engine has been started, & run for any time, during that day. These tips have worked for me.

I think Frank knows more about mixing ignition years than anyone else. Basically, what you are asking is if a 1991 style ignition can be retrofitted onto a 1986 engine.
