First of all, the temp here is right at freezing and has been at this temp a couple of weeks. Not really cold yet though.

Tried to start the boat in the driveway, no go.

Starter was spinning a little, not enough to rise and enage the flywheel. Greased it, no help.

Not the battery.

Tried it a few times, then nothing but a click.

Took off starter, put it on my charger, and it spun much faster, but cog would not rise. BUT, remember, when on the boat, it was clicking.

The connections were clean.

Need advice, what is the next step? What should I check??

Thanks guys.

A charger does not put out enough amps to spin the starter real fast. (unless you have a really big one). Since you already have it off, take it to you local auto electric shop and have them check it for you. Then you'll know for sure. Could just be a worn out starter solenoid.

Take it to the shop???

Buddy I am fixing this myself.

Starter is apart, one brush had a compressed spring, so there was only contact on 3 brushes.

Hoping that may be it, any other advice??? Other than taking it to somebody.
Just giving ya a hard time bhile. HAve to be a bigger problem than this before I am giving in.

Do you have a voltmeter and know how to use it? That's where the dreaded shop would start.

You didn't mention whether you know for sure if the battery is good. Since the starter spins faster with the charger on, it makes me suspect the battery. Here we go again, check the voltage with that voltmeter.

Fixed.

It was the bad brush. Actually the spring under the brush had compressed and there was no connection.

But, it is too dark to head out. Sunday!!!!
