So...9.9 Johnson 2 stroke. Just pulled it out of the garage for the first time this year. Electric start not engaging, but Jesus I really hope that this is due to the fact that my starting battery was almost dead, but wanted some opinions. Thanks for any input guys!

Looks like you have your battery in backwards. If you do and it's got a rectifier to charge the battery, replace that too, because it's blown.

Nope! Fully charged the battery and it's all good! I fired up in under 3 seconds!

Starter gear has to spin counterclockwise. If you have the motor starting and running, see if it's charging (about 1000 rpms for it to kick in, I think. Either works or it doesn't -- rectifier is $30 - $40.)

I'll have to check that.... However, my tm has sperate batteries so charging isn't a concern

I have to admit, watching your video sure seems like it is spinning backwards to me too. And that is because the top of the starter actually moves down instead of up like it is supposed to. But that is my uneducated guess. :noidea:

Well I learned something new today, youtube has a slow motion setting under settings of all places.

It tells an interesting story.

mrdrh99 -- did you get that solved? Interesting clip.

Need a fully charged battery and super shiny connections (sandpaper them), and use a little WD-40 on the Bendix. The gear should snap up by centrifugal force to engage the flywheel -- which requires a good strong jolt from the battery. I think you probably just need a little prepping.

Once the gear locks up at the top, the CCW spinning starter shaft will spin the engine flywheel CW to start the engine. When the engine pops, the flywheel will kick the gear back down the starter shaft.

(Assume everything was operating OK when the motor was stored. If you did some starter work, it's possible the brushes were reinstalled incorrectly, with some strange results. Otherwise, though, just a little cleaning and lube should do it for you. It's a small starter, so probably a little forgiving than the bigger ones -- still needs the usual maintenance, though.)

I do not believe you can re- install brushes the wrong way on that starter !

Maybe not. Have in mind mistakenly reversing polarity of the armature and field within the starter. Don't believe reversing connections at the battery would do it (although could blow the rectifier).

There is no wound wire field in those starters !----One brush from battery to the armature.----One brush from armature riveted to ground.-------Permanent magnets in the housing.------I must ask.--------Oldboat, have you worked on these small starters.----Do you have any on the shelf ?

Reversing the connections at the battery WILL make the starter run backwards.

Yes. Permanent magnate type, as in Racerone's post. (Don't tell him I said that.)

As far as I can tell all is well....I replaced the fried wire, everything starts and runs normal. I've never depended on the ob to charge since I have a dedicated starter battery
