quick question about engine oil

hi there I have a 1979 cruiser with a mercruiser 228/305 what weight of oil should I put on it the person who have this boat before used to put 20w50 but I read somewhere that Im not suppose to use 20w50, any suggestions thanks again.

MerCruiser makes specific recommendations about the type of oil to use. When you motor was new, SAE-30 or SAE-40 was recommended. later Mercruiser recommended their own 25W-40 oil, which is different than automotive multiweight oil. Automotive 20W-50 was never recommended.

I would use SAE-40 or Quicksilver 25W-40, if it were me

Oh no! another oil thread!

Rotella SAE-30 works fine also....available in gallon jugs at most auto parts stores and all truck stops..

ok thanks for your help I will use sae 40.
