Quick question for the upholstery folks - Carpet backing patch solution?

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't find one specific to upholstery...

I have some well worn snap in carpet in my boat, but its far from trash and currently not wanting to spend the $$$ to replace it all. I have several buttons that have pulled through the backing (that is obviously worse for wear - see pic) and wanting to see if anyone has successfully patched some backing on before replacing the buttons? I have the replacement button kit, but right now there's not a lot to attach it to.

I guess my question is two fold (1) what material makes a good backing patch and (2) how do you attach to the existing backing? I assume the answer there might be to sew it, but keep in mind I don't have an industrial strength sewing machine at my disposal. If that's going to be required, I assume I'd have to take to an upholstery shop...

I realize this isn't a long term fix, more of a temp patch to get another year or so out of all this carpet. Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. Thanks in advance!

Definitely not an expert, but just off the top of my head, maybe use some 2 part epoxy and glue on some sort of reinforcement, like fiberglass???

pretty simple fix if you have even a normal home machine.
If you have an old backback or something made from the same kind of fabric. It's called 1000D Cordura. Kinda like Canvas with a PVC rubberized backing. 1 yd of it should be plenty and it's less than $15.00 on ebay. Use contact cement to hold the patch in place then sew it with the machine. Use a #18 Jeans Needle and Upholstery Thread. Both can be purchased at WalMart. Since all the buttons should be on the outside edge of the carpeting it won't be an issue to get the needle where it needs to go. the Only reason you wouldn't be able to use a normal home machine would be IF the carpet is really thick You Might not be able to get it under the presser foot. You might also need to reach behind the needle and gently help pull the carpet thru the needle as it sews. Good Luck with your project
