Guys, I've got everything connected in my boat.

The 90hp Nissan I bought is ready to be fired up. I was just going to run a tank of 87 ocatane fuel, because it is oil injected. Well, I was reading the Nissan Owners Manual, and it says after the engine has been stored for a few months (this has been stored for about 3), you should run 5 gallons of 50:1 mix in it before you run just regular gas.

Is this a good idea, or no? I assume that since the manual says to do it, it probably wont hurt. However, I figure that if it is oil injected AND it has oil in the gas, wont it leave a lot of carbon on the pistons/plugs? Or will they go un-affected?

Anyone ever heard of, or recommend this?

Any other recommendations for a first time fire-up of an engine that has sat for 3 months?
Will the impeller go bad from sitting like that, or should I be ok?

Thanks guys!

Shawn

Yes shawn, mix 50:1 in the tank until you can verify the oil injection is working. Just don't idle around alot. The impeller will be fine If it was in good shape before.

Rick:

How can I make sure the injection is working? What's the easiest way? I just want to fire it up and get it warm (outside of water with muffs on), will this be ok? Should I let it idle high, or just regular idle? I just want to get it warm enough so that I can get a good compression test on it.

Walker:

YEP! The tilt/trim work fine. There were a few extra wires that were cut when I bought the engine that didn't have any mates. Apparently, the previous owner either wanted a remote switch in a different spot, or the original switch is no good, so he wired up a different switch. I didn't know this, so I was trying to use the factory switch on the control box and couldn't get anything. Well, I took the cover off, checked the wires, and sure enough...the wires that go to the stock switch are cut, and they are re-routed to the wires that i couldn't find a mate for. So, I just have to wire up a dash mounted switch, no prob!

Thanks guys
Shawn

Shawn,

You won't be able to tell if you are going to run it on the muffs for a few minutes. That makes it all the wiser to pre-mix the tank.

However, before you take it out, mark a line on the oil tank and check the drop from that line after a running around a good while at planing speeds.

WOOHOO!!

Idles good! Took a bit to fire, I'm assuming because of the gas having to get to the carbs, and get the old gas out if he didn't drain it, but it idles smoothly, sound great.

I will do what you said and mark a line.

Per each 5 gallon tank of gas, how much oil does it usually consume? About the same as it would if you were mixing?

Thanks again guys...I'm letting it warm up, then I'm going to test the compression.

I'll let you'll know how it is. (prey for me, the other engine idled great too but had a bad piston/cylinder.)

Take care
Shawn

If you're working the motor hard it should pump a little less than a pint with 5 gallons of gas, if you're just idling maybe half that.If you wire up your trim & tilt to a remote switch, make sure it is a self-centering switch.

45_red,

I will check the oil consumption ASAP. I plan to take it out this weekend.

As for the tilt/trim switch...I am having trouble finding a self centering momentary on switch in town. Would radio shack or something like that sell one that I could use? (temporary, beucase I know their's wont be stainless)

Thanks
Shawn

Just a normally open circuit toggle switch is adequate for temporary use until you can get the right one.Radio shack or Home Depot should have them.

Shawn,

I'm sure Radio Shack would have them. I have seen them, on occasion, at Home Depot.

Good Luck.
