Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Hang in there, Seafoam isn't a quick fix.
As for running lean, a quick check is to run wide open for a minute, then kill the engine. Pull the plugs and compare colours. Tan/brown is good. Black is rich/fouled. White is lean, (hot) very bad.
When you say "throttle response hesitates" do you mean on moderate power up? Or are you talking about giving it the gas, full throttle from near idle?

What I'm referring to is when I bring the rpms to about 1800 then attempt to accelerate at what I consider a modest past, it hesitates and will sometimes stall out and die. It's like sometimes it isn't getting gas, but that may be purely speculative.

Just sitting here thinking back on it I believe the top 2 cylinders were black. If this is the case is there a way to adjust this that is easy enough I could do?

When it gets into carb setup and balance I found it's best to work from the manual. It can be a bit tricky.
The Honda shop manual can be purchased from Helm. It's publication 61ZV300E3, BF35A/45A - BF40A/50A Marine Outboard Shop Manual

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Alright I'll see what I can find. I called all the shops around most won't even look at the Honda motors and the ones that will can't look at it till the end of August, pretty much when boating season is over. So I guess the only way to get anything accomplished is for me to do it myself.

I think you'll be further ahead this way. The manual will pay for it's self every time you have a question about the motor.
After adjusting and balancing my carbs I'm quite content with how my motor starts and runs.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Last night I finally built up the courage (some of it may have been I was mad I haven't got to use the boat) to clean the carbs. I removed all 3 carbs, removed the bowl, and cleaned them thoroughly. There was some gunk and build up in a couple of the jets and floats. After reassembling carefully and taking my time the motor runs better than it has so far. I still believe it may need to be synchronized now, but there is a difference. I have a tank full of gas with seafoam, so I think I'm going to take it out this evening on a small lake and drive it around and since it's been awhile since it's been used. Hopefully I can make that manometer in the link you sent me Steve and really get it running perfect.

Is there an article or something somewhere on how to balance the carbs? I want to get a manual but they are $75 and I'd have to order it. In pretty inpatient and would like to do it sooner than later.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Update to all this, took the boat to a close lake and unfortunately had more problems. Boat seems to run better when in neutral and just using throttle, but when going in gear it dies. When i did eventually get it to go in gear and not die out immediately it would not run above 2500 RPM's. I'm really confused at what the issue could be at this point.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

I just looked at what they did to get mine running well when I bought my Honda 50. They replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and cleaned and tuned the carbs. You do seem to be having a fuel delivery problem -- I would replace the fuel filter first, try it, then the fuel pump. But like I said, it was the dealer who took care of mine, so I can't help as far as how to do it. Good luck!

Fuel filter is fine, actually to test i removed completed and just let it have a straight shot, but replaced it to just be sure. Sure seems like a lot of things wrong with it for it being this new. I've never had this many problems with a Honda anything and I've owned ATV's, dirtbikes, and an Accord.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Still can't figure anything out, so I suppose I'm going to take it somewhere. Soonest I can get it in is September so I guess I won't get to use the boat really till next year. My second option is sell it as is and pick one up this winter when prices are lower, maybe get something with a better motor. Anyways that's about it unfortunately.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Decided to take the boat in to a dealership this week and got a call yesterday. Apparently the top to carbs idle jets were completely plug along with the high speed jets. The mechanic said basically the motor was only running on one cylinder and he is completely blown away it started as easy as it did. He is replacing the jets because he said they are so clogged he doesn't think he can clean them 100% and they aren't that expensive. Other than that he said everything is still in good condition it's lower hours and should make a world of difference when he is done.

That's great news. When you get it back I'd love to see a video of the motor starting. I thought mine started fine until I saw a video on you tube where the engine fired so quickly you didn't even hear the starter.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Mine fired off pretty fast previously, so I'll definetely see how well it zips off once it's in tip top shape. Hopefully I can get it back for under $400. I figured while it was in he might as well tune everything up so I can get to using it before the end of Summer. Of course with the weather around here lately the heat may not go away till October.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Final update, luckily it's a good one. Got the boat back Saturday and took it out on Sunday. Boat starts right up and goes in gear smoothly now without any hitch. Seems to run as good as new from my experiences. With the top up, a crew of 4, loaded ice chest and gear the boat topped out 23 mph according to GPS. This is a tad faster than before, granted last time I only had 3 people top down, and nothing on board but 3 life jackets, fire extinguisher and paddle. Not to shabby. As far as the video goes it's hard to tell the way I did it cause the boat was in the water and it's hard to hear it running with all the ambient noise.

Re: Quick Question on Honda 50hp

Hello there, I just fought the same problem for about 4 months. Finally HondaDude on this forum helped me. The RPM issue is a simple and cheap fix. I have the same motor with the same year. 2004 Honda BF50. You need a resistor kit from honda for the tach or it won't read right. Please read this thread which sounds exactly like your problem.
