quick question

could someone tell me if the laberath seals on the crankshaft are the same thing as the lower crank seals, is this just the proper name for them? Ive asked a few mechanics and they don't know what im talking about, thanks.

Never heard of them refered to as that. You usually hear of laberath seals when working with hydraulics.

The correct name for the 'seal' between the cylinders (inside section of the reed block) is indeed called a 'labyrinth' seal.... The grooves fill with oil and form a seal between the crankcase areas of each cylinder, and they are nothing like the lower crankshaft seals.

Am I surprised that mechanics don't know the correct term for them? Not really....

A little off topic, but I'm familiar with labyrinth seals on steam turbines. And I am not at all suprised a mechanic didn't know what that was. I took a car I used to have in to get the kickdown cable replaced, and the mechanic didn't know what that was.

True? I know what that is, and I don't even work on automatic transmissions!!!

I'm thinking that the mechanic maybe meant to say laberynth seal on the invoice and spelled it wrong, either way I like how some people know more than the people who get paid to fix these things.

The "'labyrinth seals" are not replaceable unless you replace the reed block assy, if you where charged to have the labyrinth seals replaced someone is try to feed you BS!!!
