Hi guys,
I'm going to attempt to restore my '89 Bayliner Capri. Deck replacement, carpet, seats, etc.. Before I start, I just had a few quick questions. Bare in mind I'm still a little new to this, and was getting the hang of it before I got sick. My question(s) are: Do you suggest doing exterior work first (gelcoat repair, painting cap and hull), before replacing deck? Also, when I do paint, should I seperate the cap from the hull? Would that be easier? Im up for any and all suggestions. Thanks a ton!! You guys are awesome!

Re: Quick Question..

Do the deck first....right after the transom and stringers. I hate to be the one to tell you but odds are it needs it. Same reality check we all have gotten

+1 on checking/verifying that the stringers and transom are in good condition. There is nothing easy about separating the cap from the hull. Not sure why you would need to do that, unless the boat is the full cockpit liner, 'clam shell' design and you needed to fully replace the stringers. In 1989, I think it was the more traditional 'deck over stringer' design, so everything should be accessible by gutting the interior.

I would do the messy stuff first . . . so that is the interior hull work. Then to the exterior stuff after the messy stuff is done. What are you painting? Fiberglass boats are not usually painted. Gelcoat preferred rather than paint.

Re: Quick Question..

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah, Im preparing myself for the worst for the deck replacement. I thought I read on one the threads that you could use paint for a fiberglass boat. If not, can you spary gelcoat? Or is it rolled? Once again, Im new at this.

Re: Quick Question..

What ya working on?

Go to the adult only section at the top and start reading...all kinds of info on restoration.

Yes you can paint a fiberglass boat....But as Ted said gel coat would be the best for a glass boat. Any thing can be done by a novice if you have the know how and facilty to do it.

Good luck!

Re: Quick Question..

One of the most valuable things you can do - if you haven't already - is to read a number of threads that document the process from start to finish. (It's a good idea to peek at the end to see if the project came to any conclusion; nothing more frustrating to read 15 pages of a resto thread only to not see how it turned out!) Odds are you can find several threads dealing with boats very similar to yours; along the way, you'll learn which iBoats members have expertise in various aspects of the rebuild process. Generally a friendly PM to one of those folks asking them to look in on your thread will get you just the help you need.

Good luck!

Re: Quick Question..

Spraying Gelcoat is Optimum. Not easy for the DIY'er. Lots of prep and then LOTS of sanding. Needs a bit of special equipment and knowledge but we can and will help you with it. As others have said, the "Cosmetics" will prolly be the least of your worries. 25 year old boats, unless they have been meticulously cared for, will have structural issues that will need your attention before the cosmetic issues. Is this an I/O or Outboard setup? Post up some pics so we can see what you're working with.

She looks in pretty good condition. make sure you take your time tearing her down and document everything helps to have a second set of hands to take pictures.

Re: Quick Question..

Up to you, you could also just change the title of the thread to what ever you want it to be for the resto.........

Title change has to be done fairly soon, not sure if it's a # of days since started, or the # of posts to the thread, but at some point you can't change the title of the thread.
