quick start on johnson

what rpm should my 1995 150 johnson run on start up i was told that it is in quick start mode till it gets to running temp. when i start it it idles at 1800 rpm but it worries me so ive not ever got it completly to running temp and this is all on the hose iv not put in the water yet.

If it was me i would try putting it in the water. And my reasoning for that is it will drope the rpms because you have it on some what of a load

It will idle higher on the hose because there's no backpressure but it should come down to 1100-1200. It may well not be coming out of Quick Start.

thanks for the in put but i will not put it in the water till i get it figured out and till i get a water pump kit in it because i do not want to blow it but i could get a barel and cut it off and use it as a test tank though. as far as weather or not it is coming out of quick start idk how to tell weather or not it is or not any ideas.

put it in the water, barrel is not enough for that motor. some things you just can't test at home. just like the idle, cannot be properly set until the motor is in the water.

If QuikStart is functioning properly, the advance automatically disengages at around 96 degrees F. or 1100 RPM, whichever come first.

Steve, As Ezeke says, my '98 Johnny 150 idles at 1100 RPM when it is cold, and drops to 750RPM or so after it warms up (in the water).

BTW on a cold day (25-30s F), it will stay in quickstart mode for 10 minutes or so.

well like i stated above it idles at 1800 rpm after start up and i did let id run long enough that the block and heads were getting pretty close to running temp (well just by feel not really sure how close it was) but it was still idling at 1800 i dont think it not being out of the water would cause that it not being in the water shouldnt cauce it to idle no more than 2 or 3 hundred rpm higher should it

The QuikStart thermal control is in the cylinder head temperature switch so the temperature that I was referring to is there.

ok then the heads were at at least 95 to 100 degrees but it was still idling at 1800 rpm

Steve, You should hear a definite drop off in RPM, when quickstart mode ends. 1800RPM is altogether too high, even w/o backpressure.

You might pickup a service manual. it has the test for the temp sensor that the Quickstart system uses. The sensor is $80+ to purchase.

Check the yellow/red wire for 12 volts while the engine is running. You should only see voltage on this wire while the starter solenoid is engaged.

The best way is to get the factory manual, then the experts can guide you without having to type the manual out for you.
You'll find the cream of the internet right here but you have to help them to help you. The factory manual was the best investment I made boatwise.

mmmk ill have i try an get me one asap but one more question is there any way to bypass the thermal sensor for the quick start to make it come out of quick start.

One of your overheat switches has a tan wire and a white w black stripe wire.

Disconnect the white with black stripe wire at the bullet connector and ground the end of the wire coming from the powerpack to the engine block with clips so that it stays grounded.

You could also take the RPM above 1100.

You should check the throttle control cables to insure throttle arm is against the stop. 1800 rpms the engine is out of quick start hot or cold. If the adjustments are correct it will drop out of Quick Start on a flush hose, takes a few mins to warm up sometime.

no throttle cable hooked up and throttle is completly released. are u saying that its not in the quick start? wat should i do next?

Steve, The OMC Service manual specifies the quickstart sensor (white/black) wire is closed at 105* f and open below 90*F.

As Ezeke stated, ground the white/black lead to the poerpack, to take it out of quickstart mode.

If, when the engine is first cold started, the ignition is turned from the off position, and

If the powerpack is good, and

If the temp switch is connected, and

If the temp switch is good, and

If the cylinder head temperature has stayed below 105 degrees F., and

If the engine has not gone faster than 1100 RPM, then

The engine should be in QuikStart mode.

Otherwise, QuikStart should have released.

You now need to acquire a Factory Service Manual covering your motor and perform a Linkage and Synchronization as defined in section two of the manual.
