I still haven't found the problem, but I'm understanding the system better...

I have a '96 70hp Johnson (J70TLEDA) that will not start with the key when cold but will pull start just fine and always starts fine when warm. Troubleshooting has found that when using the ignition switch or a remote starter across the solenoid with the yellow/red (start) wire still attached I do not have spark as long as there is battery voltage on the yellow/red wire. As soon as the key (or remote starter) is released, I get a spark. If I disconnect the yellow/red wire so that the quick start system doesn't get battery voltage (or pull start), the motor starts beautifully and runs just fine.

It appears that the ignition is grounded when the quick start system has battery voltage but I can't figure out how this could be or a way to test my theory. Does anybody have a better idea?
